ST. ANNE'S PUB IS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. Since 2002, St. Anne’s Public House, has been a ministry of Christ Church of Spokane, Washington. Though St. Anne's is a publication unto itself, we are still based in Spokane, and we still have the same mission: stimulating people to love God with body, soul, and mind with eclectic — but always Christ-centered — interviews, reviews, and commentary. We deliver fresh issues here at our website with the changing of the seasons (unless you live in Arizona, which has only two seasons). We also sometimes distribute new issues on CDs, but only as funds permit. Back issues are available by clicking on their cover art in the left hand column. Since we can’t possibly fit everything on CD issue, we share web-exclusive content On Tap.

Now Playing - Socialism and the Hope of Christendom

Summer is passing, and it has been months since you’ve sailed into St. Anne’s Pub and sidled up to the bar. Moons have risen, waxed and waned since then and here you are still. The folksy music people have long since rolled up their mic cords and packed their Celtic drums and decamped, and lo!—amazingly—you remain. . . A fine layer of dust has settled on all the extruding parts of your face, and you yourself are in danger of being covered with a sheet and taken for an old overstuffed chair. And still, you abide like a stone gargoyle by the bar, waiting for the impossibly slow service, and resolved to withhold tips until your three year old is shaving. Creative new curses have been fashioned, vetted, and lined up to launch like bolts from a crossbow, if any of us ever show up again . . .

Well . . . it’s time to pull that trigger, because we’re back. . . To say we are humbled that anyone is still here, doesn’t quite fathom the depths of our incredulity. Here’s that beer, and we present our persons for flagellation. And though in general we think excuses are for molly-coddles, we thought some sort of explanation was due . . . You see, since the last national election we’ve been interred in this socialist re-education camp, and have only recently crawled out under the wire. Traumatized by our experience, we’re here to prepare our patrons for life in the new Socialist utopia.

Joining us are our guests. Hilmar von Campe is a former member of the Hitler Youth and is author of Defeating the Totalitarian Lie, he spoke to us on the similarities he sees between the trajectory of America and the totalitarianism evidenced in the Third Reich. Our second guest is retired professor of Sociology, Dr. Alvin J. Schmidt, author of How Christianity Changed the World. Dr. Schmidt spoke with us about how the church incarnated the gospel and changed the world in the past, and how it can continue this transformation in the future.

Along with our guests we have our usual eclectic cocktail of reviews, commentary, and the unclassifiable. Thanks for hanging around. Go find yourself a corner, pour yourself a pint, and join the conversation.

Previous Issue - Monsters: Fierce and Fantastic

Perhaps you're wondering: what happened to Joost Nixon, the usual host of St. Anne’s Public House. Well we here in The Pub are wondering the same thing. We’re now fairly certain he’s been kidnapped by the aliens from the Whiskey Issue. Whether he’s touring the galaxy or suffering an alien experiment we don’t know. We don’t know whether to fear or wonder….

When we feel passionate about something at St. Anne’s we usually produce an issue on it, so this issue is devoted to the topic of monsters. Something in man’s nature knows the reality of monsters in a fallen world, even when modern tools promise safety. The long running TV show Unsolved Mysteries and the never ending carnival of new low budget slasher films are signs that modern man still sleeps with monsters under his bed.

Zombies are fictions. Real monsters can be much more awe inspiring and terrifying. How aught we to understand monsters, and what part do they play in God’s story?

To help us find our way through this topic we will speak with Heath Herrick, an English professor at Gonzaga University, about the horror genre in literature, and we will also talk with Rebecca Stewart, author of Here Be Monsters, published by Red Wine Press.

The New St. Anne's Site - How It Works

The previous Flash website for St. Anne's Public House looked great, but it was made back in 2006 to do only one thing, play audio. Back then delivering content to mobile devices, or optimizing tracks to play on various players wasn't an issue. Some people even protested when we went from tapes to CDs. This site is redesigned with mobile devices in mind, and while we may not be able to make the site look pretty on any and all mobile browsers, this site should at least be functional on a great many of them. Here's a tour of some of our new website features and also some of the changes to St. Anne's Public House.

TWO WAYS TO GET THE LATEST ISSUES
Now you can get St. Anne's current issues in two ways. You can listen to a newer issue in a single track, which will play by directly clicking on the large cover art, or you can download a ZIP file that contains all the tracks for the particular issue. BlackBerrys find it difficult to play a full issue directly from our website, so if you have a BlackBerry, we recommend that you download the ZIP file to your computer and load the tracks of an issue like you would a music album. Each track contains metadata and cover art.

ON TAP IS NOW A MULTIMEDIA BLOG
The old site only allowed us to post audio, and it took something like 5 different programs to accomplish the whole work flow. This site permits us to post audio, text, images, video, just about anything, and in a way that works much more efficiently for our contributors and web ninjas. The RSS feed will send the content directly to you.

EASIER ACCESS TO CONTENT
This new site is optimized to make it easier to find content. The available content of all back issues is available directly from the home page. We also now have a new search feature, which will make it easier to access site content. Some of our past issues need to be remastered for better audio fidelity and will be released over time. If there's a back issue you are interested in that may be out of stock, let us know.

RED WINE PRESS
The Press is a new feature of the Pub that allows us to get hardbacks of back issues to you more efficiently and to publish our own books, which is something we have wanted to do for a while. To visit the Press go to "The Press" button at the top of this home page.

WHAT ABOUT THE CDS? DO YOU STILL MAKE THEM?
Yes, as funds permit. But we have many more subscribers now than we did back in the old days. Duplicating, printing, and shipping a hardback issue cost many thousands of dollars. It's our preferred product, and we're proud of our work. However, we would like to keep issue production more regular, while also keeping the begging to a minimum. But we're not above begging.

IS ST. ANNE'S STILL AN AUDIO JOURNAL?
Of course. On this home page you will find the two latest issues accessible through free download. But through the newly optimized On Tap we are now able to post things much more readily than we were able to before.

CAN I STILL GET HARDBACKS OF BACK ISSUES?
Yes. "The Press" button will take you to Red Wine Press, where you can buy back issues. For almost a decade we have been filling requests for back issues and shipping them for free. I know. Is that crazy, or what? What can I say: we love you all. But we had to change that. Now you can still get them by purchasing them for a modest sum.

DO YOU STILL ACCEPT DONATIONS?
St. Anne's Public House is a labor of love, but every little bit does help....
